Laptop Home Repair, Help?

Well, my laptop's charger or the area where the charger plugs in is busted. My father said it was the laptop itself - any suggestions to how I could fix it would having to go to a store?

That's a relatively easy repair depending on your skill level with a soldering gun and dissassembly of a laptop. Basically what has happened (if you can wiggle it around real easy) is that it has come loose from the motherboard. This requires you to take the laptop apart and using a soldering gun, melt the old solder off and very carefully resolder it back into place. Sometimes a good idea to get a new connector also.

This is one of the more common repairs done on laptops and can cost a decent amount depending on the shops in your area. Depending on how new it is, you might be better off using the money towards a new one unless you can fix it yourself.

First, you need to figure out which part is actually broken.

If you take a pen, or any other thin, stiff object and poke it into the DC port on the laptop, can you move the port or its contents? Did the plug wiggle while inserted?

If so, it's the jack. New jacks are about $20, and anyone who is good with a soldering iron can replace it. It takes about an hour to take the laptop apart, replace the jack, and rebuild the laptop. Some laptops, mainly Toshibas and newer Lenovos, use jacks that plug into the board; these can be replaced without soldering.

You can test the power cord with a simple voltmeter. Touch the red lead to the inside pin, and the black lead to the outside of the connector. The correct voltage/amperage should be marked on the "brick" portion of the cord. Usually around 19.2 volts at around 1 amp. Amperage is not as important as voltage in this instance.

Power cords can be ordered for around $20-150 depending on model and whether you want an OEM or generic replacement.

This will require an identical replacement power socket at best. You will probably not be able to buy one from a normal component store. So you might need to get one from the manufacturer. They normally refuse to sell you one, offering only the complete motherboard. There is also a fair chance that it will have actually damaged the board. Not a good home repair job, even for someone with a lot of experience in soldering, dismantling and assembling machines.

How was it busted? Perhaps you could get your hands on an equivalent laptop power generator (although I doubt they sell them) and replace the old one.
