How can I squeeze full needed performance from a netbook?

So I have a netbook with usual netbook specs. I want to use it just for word processing and browsing the internet. How would I make the netbook (Windows 7), be able to do just this, to get max battery life and to make it faster. Like what vital components can i turn off, so I can do just these things. Also some tips for improving battery life would be welcome. Thanks

Install XP or a smaller footprint O/S such as Ubuntu or a cloud based O/S such as JoliCloud.
